Bee Season

I started reading Myla Goldberg's Bee Season. Here is a funny paragraph from the beginning:

Saul enters Baruch Yeshiva on sholarship. His scholarship is revoked during his freshman year when, in the name of mental exploration, he convinces his roomates to place a tab on his tongue and the resultant bad trip leads to said roomate painting his naked body blue and white and running into the dean's office to declare himself the new Israeli Prime Minister.

Apparently, it is going to be a movie with Richard Gere and Juliet Binoche as the parents. The directors will be the team that directed 2001's The Deep End. That movie was pretty dark and unsettling, so there is hope that this adaptation will stay true to the quirky, dark themes of the book.

Eerily, the author looks exactly like I did, when I was 15, in this picture.

This interview with the author, had apparently taken place before the book had been optioned.
