| I attended a very enjoyable, over-flow capacity, lecture given by Milton Glaser at the Boston Public Library on Wednesday. Although he might have seemed the perfect ad for Apple - the older statesman iconic designer with booming New York accent behind his 12" PowerMac - he cursed computers for the duration of his lecture and said that designers should not "touch them until they are at least 45". The funniest part of the lecture, to me, was during the brief Q & A when someone asked him to talk about the importance of font choices in his work. He said something to the effect of "Fonts (ain't) the game". Then he held up his thumb and index finger close together, as if he was going to play te world's smallest violin, and said "they are maybe that much of the game". He went on to say that some people he knows only use 4 or 5 fonts for their whole careers and that "sometimes it doesn't matter what font you use". I guess if you helped define the rules for modern graphic design, you can break them - or stay a Luddite. Anyway, I made up this quick sketch at work to commemorate the lecture. | font_glaser Originally uploaded by bkerr. |
